Paypal Now Supports Philippine Peso

This past few days, two of my favorite technology websites, Mashable and Yugatech, run the same story about Paypal now supporting multiple currencies including Philippine Peso. This is great news for us Filipinos. Ever since online shopping was made possible years ago, Filipinos seemed to have lagged behind because of currency issues and the absence of local banks that cater to internet shopping.

Not anymore. With Paypal’s newest upgrade, you can now pay and receive payments online using your preferred currency. Here is a complete list of the currencies now supported by Paypal:

Canadian Dollars, Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollars, New Zealand Dollars, Swiss Francs, Hong Kong Dollars, Singapore Dollars, Swedish Kroner, Danish Kroner, Polish Zloty, Norwegian Kroner, Hungarian Forints, Czech Koruny, Israeli Shekels, Mexican Pesos, Brazilian Real, Malaysian Ringgits, Philippine Pesos, Taiwan New Dollars and Thai Baht.

Just a side note: In my previous post, I wrote about how you can create a Paypal account and connect it to your local bank. I think it is important to mention here that you should use the same name on both accounts. When you apply for your UnionBank cyberaccount card, the bank requires that you present two government issued identification cards. That means that you are required to use your full legal name.

In creating your Paypal account, you should also use the same name so that both accounts would match. I’m telling you this because I happened to use my nickname in my Paypal account. When I paid for my domain at godaddy.com, I had to produce proofs that I was not illegally using somebody else’s money. The case was resolved right away but I’m sure you wouldn’t want that inconvenience to happen to you.
